WSOP Announces 25 Events with $1,500 Buy-In
The World Series of Poker revealed that the 51st annual WSOP will have 25 events with a buy-in of $1,500.
As the most prestigious poker tournament series in the world, the 2020 WSOP takes place from 26 May to 15 July 2020, at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.
As always, the $1,500 price point continues to be the most wide-spread one.
There will be 25 different live gold bracelet events utilizing this popular buy-in level, and anyone playing in one of these events is guaranteed a minimum 25,000 starting chip stack.
Ever since it first appeared in 1977, the $1,500 buy-in level has been a regular price point at the World Series of Poker. Back then, a $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em event attracted 38 players and created a $57,000 prize pool. The winner Louis Hunsaker, from Austin, Texas took home the gold bracelet and $34,200.
Ever since then, every World Series of Poker schedule included this price point has been (except for 1985), and really gained traction in the nineties, becoming a staple of the event schedule throughout years.
The eight No-Limit Hold’em offerings in 2019 featured 3,332 participants, a $4,498,200 prize pool and a $642,173 first place award.
WSOP Vice President Jack Effel said: “We have found the $1,500 price point to be the sweet spot in poker, perfectly balancing affordability, field size and prize pool to offer great value for participating players. As we continue to cater our offerings to find something for everyone, the $1,500 buy-ins remain a core staple of the WSOP.”
As mentioned, this year’s WSOP will include 25 different live tournaments with the $1,500 buy-in level, and they will offer unique formats encompassing 18 different game types, with some of them using the freezeout format.
Another 2020 novelty is that several of the $1,500 buy-in events will have a dedicated leaderboard, like the WSOP Player of the Year race.
