Sheffield Swaps Green Baize Of Snooker Tables To Green Baize Of Poker
The 2013 World Snooker Championships in Sheffield are well under way now, but that is not the only big tournament being played on the green baize in The Steel City over the next two weeks, as The Grosvenor Casino Sheffield are to host their own World Championship Snooker Poker Tournament to run along side the final of the snooker on Sunday 5th and Monday 6th May.
The tournament may have a relatively large buy-in at £500 + £50, but 50% of every registration fee and 10% of the total prize pool will be donated to charity. The charity that will receive the money is The Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice which is the official charity of World Snooker.
Chairman of the World Snooker organisation is Barry Hearn and he is really looking forward to the new event. He said, “If you fancy yourself as a poker player then get involved because this event is going to set the pulses racing. It’s high stakes and it’s a chance to make a huge profit. Most importantly, a large part of the proceeds are going to the Bluebell Wood which is a fantastic cause.”
Another well known face from the snooker world will also be taking part. Steve Davis is no stranger to Sheffield having won The Snooker World Championships no less than six times, and he like Barry Hearn is really looking forward to this great event. He said, “I’m working for the BBC at the Crucible, but as soon as I get a chance I’ll be at the Grosvenor to see what’s happening in the other green baize game and hopefully play a few hands. It’s going to be a lot of fun and the great thing about poker is that anyone can win, given a bit of luck and a steady hand.”
It is great to see these new kind of events taking place, especially with 50% of all registrations and 10% of the prize pool being donated to such a worth while charity, and hopefully the poker playing public of Sheffield and the UK will turn out in force for such a great event.
