In the poker world there are players that are known for their online successes, while others specialise in live poker. One player that is known for his online prowess is Daniel Cates, but now the 24-year-old from Maryland can add a major live poker title to his already impressive online CV as he has won the latest Alpha8 title in Johannesburg, South Africa.

During the two day event that concluded over the course of last weekend Cates led from the front as he ended Day 1 with the chip lead, a lead that he never surrender throughout Day 2. Philipp Gruissem was in the field at the weekend and he was aiming to win his third successive Alpha8 title, but it was not to be as the German exited early on Day 2 to finish in 6th place, but he will no doubt be in the winners circle again soon after a very impressive 2013.

Erik Seidel came 5th and Jeff Gross finished on the bubble in 4th place and it was not long until the 3rd place player, Jason Mercier, was dismissed from the tournament as well. The heads up battle between Cates and Kinesh Pather lasted just 14 hands with Cates winning the first 12 of those hands, but two hands later normal service was resumed and Cates took down the title and the first prize of $500,000 when his J T beat the K J of his playing partner. The flop came T 8 7 to give Cates a pair, and when the river and turn were revealed as J T Cates had a full house and the tournament was over.

A very impressive performance from Daniel Cates and if he continues his impressive early play from 2014 he could well have a career year with future success no doubt just around the corner.
